The Opportunity
The School of Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics (STEMP) is one of the largest schools in the University of the South Pacific and is sufficiently resourced to pursue excellence in teaching and research. The Discipline of Computing Science and Information Systems (CS/IS) in STEMP offers programmes in Computing Science, Information Systems, including 2 Professional programmes in ICT (Bachelor of Networks and Security; and Bachelor of Software Engineering) accredited by the Australian Computer Society. The Discipline of CS/IS also offers Postgraduate programmes in Information Technology (Computing Science and Information Systems) and Cybersecurity. STEMP is now searching for a staff who can join the existing, dynamic team and take the School forward.
A Lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University, develop and enhance laboratory exercise, and engage in activities that maintain and advance their scholarly, research, and professional expertise relevant to the discipline. Besides teaching and research, the appointee will contribute towards the general administrative duties of the CS/IS Discipline.
USP is a multi-modal university, offering courses in a variety of modes including print, face-to-face, blended and online. The Appointee will be based at the main Laucala campus in Fiji but will teach across all campuses in the region. The appointee will also be expected to teach evening sessions.
General standard as a Lecturer:
i) The incumbent is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University and to carry out activities to maintain and develop their scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline.
ii) The incumbent is expected to demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff.
General standard as a Senior Lecturer:
i) The incumbent is expected to make significant contributions to the teaching effort of the School, Institute, programmer, or an interdisciplinary area.
ii) The incumbent is expected to play a major role in scholarship, research, and/or professional activities.
iii) The incumbent is expected to demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff.
Specific Duties
Specific duties required of a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer include:
- course coordination, including marking and assessment,
- preparation and delivery of lectures, tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions, and studio sessions,
- curriculum development,
- academic counselling and consultation with students,
- conduct of individual and/or collaborative research; and strengthening of one’s publication record in international refereed journals,
- supervision of the programme of study of postgraduate students engaged in course work,
- supervision of postgraduate research projects in accordance with the USP Postgraduate Research Supervision policy,
- involvement in Paid Outside Work,
- assigned administrative responsibilities, and
- attendance at School/Institute meetings and/or membership of committees.
The Person we Seek
A Lecturer/Senior Lecturer is expected to have:
- a PhD in CS/IS or relevant tertiary teaching qualification.
- relevant tertiary teaching experience (normally 2 years for Lecturer and 4 years for Senior Lecturer) at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- experience in successful supervision of Masters by research and/or PhD students;
- good research publications in ranked journals with quality of research (QoR) at Lecturer/Senior Lecturer level
- ability to teach, work collaboratively within team and independently;
- ability to teach at all levels (undergraduate and postgraduate) of a range of standard topics preferably in Data Science with a focus towards data management and artificial intelligence including but not limited to big data, data visualization, machine learning, deep learning, statistical learning, clustering and classification, data modelling, and also topics in Computing and Information Systems streams.
- Knowledge of data science programming tools, in particular R and Python;
- excellent written and oral communication skills in English.;
- strong organizational skills; and
- as a Senior Lecturer will normally require a record of demonstrable scholarly and professional achievement in the relevant discipline.

The position is available for a term of 5 years and may be renewed by mutual agreement, subject to successful performance outcomes.
Salary Range
Lecturer: FJ $78,200.18 to FJ $102,893.50 per annum.
Senior Lecturer: FJ $106,090.63 to FJ $122,412.06 per annum.
