The Opportunity
The position of Senior Technician (Chemistry) is created to supervise the day-to-day operation of the Chemistry laboratories, providing specialist chemistry support and ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of technical support service in the chemistry teaching and research laboratories and related facilities.
Specific Duties
Duties include the following:
• Responsible for supervision and management of the daily operations of chemistry teaching and research laboratories and related facilities.
• Provide administrative support related functions, such as obtaining quotations from overseas and local vendors, evaluating quotations, executing cost analysis and prompt purchasing processes, and dealing with finance and HR matters as required.
• Conduct staff appraisals and annual staff reviews for subordinate staff.
• Support and mentor subordinate staff in their professional development.
• Liaise with regional campus laboratory staff members to ensure sufficient and timely supply of resources for laboratory practical classes at the regional campuses.
• Ensure that the chemistry laboratories are maintained in a clean and safe condition.
• Serve as health and safety monitor for chemistry teaching and research laboratories.
• May assist with research and consultancy activities as directed by the Head of School.
• Coordinate arrangements for field trips, sample and specimen collections for undergraduate courses and research students as required.
• Maintain inventories and records of stores of consumables and equipment such as chemicals, preserved specimens, glassware and other consumables held in chemistry.
• Issue and maintain records of keys, inventories of equipment and other centrally held resources relating to chemistry laboratory and field work.
• Ensure that any maintenance requirements or defects noted in chemistry laboratories and chemistry staff offices are properly reported and rectified.
• Assist in coordinating arrangements for important events in the University calendar, such as setting up displays for open day.
• Maintain proper record of staff attendance under the incumbent’s supervision. • Conduct induction procedures and training for incoming post-graduate students and other laboratory users.
The Person we Seek
To be considered for this position, applicants must have:
- at least a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry and Postgraduate qualifications in the relevant discipline;
- at least four (4) years of relevant experience and management expertise;
- very good expert-level knowledge of chemistry laboratory-related OHS issues and hazardous materials management; and
- demonstrated ability to lead and mentor a team of technical support staff.

The position is available for a term of three (3) years and may be renewed by mutual agreement and satisfactory performance.
Salary Range
- Level 2: FJ$61,627 to FJ$75,265 per annum
