The Opportunity
The appointee will assist the Senior Technician in the day to day running of Civil Engineering section of the School of Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics. The appointee will be required to work unsupervised in setting up of the labs for the second, third and fourth year BE program. He/she will be required to keep accurate records of requirements and stocks of consumables and carry out minor repair and maintenance of equipment used in the laboratories. The appointee will also be required to assist academic staff on technical matters and assist in research work and consultancy. He/She will also be required to monitor and maintain laboratory OHS standards. The incumbent will be required to work independently and unsupervised. He/She is responsible for managing engineering teaching equipment’s, maintaining and troubleshooting lab equipment, conducting regular maintenance, and promptly addressing minor repairs when required. Additionally, he/she is required setup laboratory experiments, provide guidance and support to students and staff during lab sessions.
The position of Technician in Civil Engineering is to assist the Senior Technician in the day to day running of the Engineering Labs (Hardware) and software Labs in the Department of Civil Engineering.
The incumbent will be required to work independently and unsupervised in getting the parts, equipment, resources for the labs, projects and get the fabrication on time. This will involve constantly liaising with the course coordinators, senior and other school technicians, using petty cash for buying parts and assisting fellow technicians. In addition, the job holder will be expected to assist in Post Grad and academic research project work from time to time. He/She will be required to assist in compiling reports, updating inventory of parts, equipment, computers and parts, for all engineering lab facilities. Other services that the incumbent is expected to provide is assist in preventive maintenance work in the lab and assist the senior technician in carrying this out. He/She will be required to uphold the OHS policies of the school and the section. The incumbent is required to uphold cleanliness and organization in the lab and follow proper procedures, including timely completion of administrative forms.
To perform the tasks required, the appointee will need to:
(i) Apply a body of broad knowledge and experience to a varied range of tasks.
(ii) Apply a body of broad knowledge and experience to a limited range of more complex tasks.
(iii) Apply a body of broad knowledge and experience in the development of areas of specialist expertise including functions, policies, practices or subject matter.
(iv) New graduates at this level may apply theoretical knowledge in a straightforward way.
(v) Provide instruction or advice and decisions on rules and entitlements.
The Person we Seek
To be considered for this position, applicants must have:
- Completion of a degree in Civil Engineering or cognate discipline without subsequent relevant work experience; or
- Completion of a diploma and two (2) years subsequent relevant work experience; or
- Completion of a post-trades certificate or advan

Salary Range
FJ $23,799.01 to FJ $30,051.81 per annum
