The Opportunity
The University of the South Pacific invites suitably qualified applicants for the LIBRARY ATTENDANT position based at the University Library.
The appointee will be responsible for: maintaining the general appearance and neatness of the library collection by shelving library materials and ensuring the neat presentation of all sections of the library collection, ensure the provision of quality customer service such as photocopying and assisting with displays, responding to directional queries and looking after the library resources.
The incumbent is expected to operate under the direct supervision of the Library Assistant/Senior Staff Customer Services. He/She whilst ultimately reporting to the University Librarian is expected to be efficient in the performance of the stated responsibilities within USP Library procedures with the following required competencies:
- Knowledge of library attendant work;
- Ability to work with people;
- Have an understanding of customer services; and
- Display good interpersonal skills.
Specific duties will include:
- Ensure that all sections of the library collection are in order according to Library of Congress/Dewey Classification and is well presented for users;
- Ensure that library spaces are well presented for users;
- Shelve library materials;
- Responsible for photocopying and related tasks;
- Physical preparation of library materials (spine labelling (call numbers) and stamp library materials);
- Identify damaged/infested books that require major repairs;
- Provide checkpoint security services during library opening hours in the evening, weekends and as per the roster;
- Enforce Library rules and regulations - food/noise;
- Answer directional queries - where collections/services/buildings/offices are located;
- Handle minor repairs of print materials;
- Responsible for library mail services (USP and non-USP);
- Putting up and removal of cyclone shutters as needed during cyclone season and before the annual vacation period;
- Assemble and dismantle bookshelves as/when needed; and
- Assist regional libraries with packing library items for dispatch to regional campuses.
The Person we Seek
To be considered for this position, applicants must have:
- Completion of a relevant certificate (Library related); or
- Completion of Year 12 secondary school studies with relevant work experience; or
- Relevant experience or combination of relevant experience and education/training; and
- Good communication skills

The position is available for a term of three (3) years and may be renewed by mutual agreement, subject to successful performance outcomes.
Salary Range
- FJ$17,273 to FJ$28,919 per annum
