The Opportunity

The School of Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics is one of the largest schools in the University of the South Pacific and is resourced to pursue excellence in teaching and research. The school offers several Undergraduate programs, including two Professional programmes in ICT (Bachelor of Networks & Security and Bachelor of Software Engineering) accredited by the Australian Computer Society, two Engineering programmes (Bachelor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering) accredited by Engineering New Zealand, Civil Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Information Systems and Mathematics.

The School also offers Postgraduate programmes in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Mathematics, and Physics, as well as Master's and PhD programmes across all its disciplines.  The School is now considering interested staff who can join the dynamic team and take the School forward, with particular attention to new and expanding fields in Science and Technology, and a focus on the Pacific.

The purpose of this position is to provide technical, emergency and OHS support for students and academic staff in the undergraduate laboratories of the Discipline of Physics in the School of Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics (STEMP).  


Specific Duties

The appointee will retrieve, prepare and lay out experimental apparatus, instrumentation and consumables required for first, second and third-year physics laboratory experiments, and be available to attend to any technical issues that may arise during class. He or she may be required to work beyond normal working hours if there is the need. The appointee is expected to have a good working knowledge of electrical/electronic equipment and instruments in the discipline’s teaching laboratories and must be able to carry out effective maintenance and repairs whenever necessary. Familiarity with, or at least a good appreciation of typical emergency evacuation procedures and contemporary OHS practices is expected. He or she wil provide support for academic staff on technical matters in accordance with established protocols, and will assist the senior technician in the efficient and safe operation of the physics laboratories.

(iii) Problem solving: solve problems of a complex nature, perhaps in a team situation.

To perform the tasks required, the appointee will need to:

(i) Apply a body of broad knowledge and experience to a varied range of tasks.

(ii) Apply a body of broad knowledge and experience to a limited range of more complex tasks.

(iii) Apply a body of broad knowledge and experience in the development of areas of specialist expertise including functions, policies, practices or subject matter.

(iv) New graduates at this level may apply theoretical knowledge in a straightforward way.

(v) Provide instruction or advice and decisions on rules and entitlements.

The Person we Seek

To be considered for this position, applicants must have:

  • Completion of a degree in Physics or cognate discipline without subsequent relevant work experience; or
  • Completion of a diploma in Physics or cognate discipline and two (2) years subsequent relevant work experience; or
  • Completion of a post-trades certificate or advanced certificate in cognate discipline and five (5) years of relevant experienc

The position is available for a term of three (3) years and may be renewed by mutual agreement

Salary Range

  • FJ $33,327.85 to FJ $42,084.19 per annum
