The Opportunity

The University of the South Pacific seeks to fill the position of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Animal Science in the School of Agriculture, Geography, Environment, Ocean, and Natural Sciences (SAGEONS). The appointee will coordinate and teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Animal Science in the Discipline of Agriculture and Food Technology (Samoa Campus). The appointee will be expected to contribute to the development, the teaching, and implementation of existing Animal Science courses, supervise Postgraduate students at Master’s and PhD levels, and engage with industry stakeholders. The candidate is expected to undertake research and contribute to research outputs within the broad areas of Animal Science on issues related to Non-ruminant Animal Production in the Pacific Island Countries. The appointee will be expected to successfully attract some research grants (including externally) in the thematic area of research and support the School and University mission and goals as set out in the University Strategic Plan.

Specific Duties


As a Lecturer, the general standard is:

i) A Lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University and to carry out activities to maintain and develop their scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline.

ii) A Lecturer is expected to demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff.


As a Senior Lecturer, the general standard is:

i) A Senior Lecturer is expected to make significant contributions to the teaching effort of a School, Institute, programme, or an interdisciplinary area.

ii) A Senior Lecturer is also expected to play a major role in scholarship, research, and/or professional activities.

iii) A Senior Lecturer is expected to demonstrate excellent communication skills, and the ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff


The Person we Seek

To be considered for this position, applicants must have:

For Lecturer - The candidate should have:

  • a PhD in Non-ruminant Animal Production or relevant discipline with relevant tertiary teaching and/or research experience; or
  • relevant tertiary teaching experience (normally 4 years) at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and/or formal tertiary teaching qualifications;
  • good research publications in ranked journals with quality of research (QoR) at Lecturer level;
  • experience in supervising Master by research students to completion;
  • ability to teach a range of standard topics in Animal Science;
  • excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

For Senior Lecturer - The candidate should have:

  • a PhD in Non-ruminant Animal Production or relevant discipline with relevant tertiary teaching experience and/or research experience; or
  • in addition, a Senior Lecturer will normally require a record of demonstrable scholarly and professional achievement in the relevant discipline.
  • a minimum of 6 years relevant tertiary teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • significant research publication records equivalent to USP Quality of Research (QoR) at Senior Lecturer level;
  • experience in successful supervision of Masters/PhD students;
  • ability to be entrepreneurial in attraction external grants.

 Preference will be given to applicants with:

  • experience in teaching in developing countries;
  • experience in Distance Teaching and Flexible Learning;
  • willingness to undertake research as demonstrated by research publication records;
  • willingness to work as a member of a dynamic team and experience in supervising postgraduate research students;
  • experience in online, distance and flexible learning teaching in a multicultural environment;
  • Strong evidence of attracting external grants;
  • To be able to demonstrate self-reliant and can work independently and;
  • Be able to take advantage of the opportunities presented to develop research with other USP units and relevant external organizations including government departments and CROP agencies.

The position is available for a term of five (5) years and may be renewed by mutual agreement.

Salary Range

  • Lecturer – WST $118,037.32 to WST $155,311.79 per annum
  • Senior Lecturer – WST $160,134.28 to WST$184,771.63 per annum
