The Opportunity

The University of the South Pacific is seeking an enthusiastic Assistant Accountant to join our Finance Section at Tonga Campus. The Assistant Accountant will be responsible for the overall financial responsibilities at the Campus.  The position assists with the processing of payroll, bank and other general ledger reconciliations, verification of request for payments, invoicing of fees and charges and monitoring and reporting of all the revenue and expenses at the Campus, including self-funding units, Capex Funds and Project Funds. The incumbent also provides support to ensure that the Campus remains within the approved budget and relevant targeted saving is accomplished, as well as managing debtors, creditors and the procurement  and payment function. The position also assists in providing financial support to all the other areas of Finance section at the Campus.

Under the supervision of the Campus Director and Management Accountant – Regional Campuses, the incumbent will be required to provide financial support to Tonga Campus, and help to achieve the Campus objectives as part of USP’s Strategic Plan. The job will involve liaising with Central Finance, local and overseas vendors. The incumbent will be expected to meet tight deadlines with minimum supervision and  be able to achieve competing priorities. A high level of accuracy and quality is expected in all the financial reports.


The Person we Seek

To be considered for this position, applicants must have:

  • A degree in Accounting with two years subsequent relevant experience; or
  • In exceptional cases and only with the prior endorsement of the Executive Director People and Workforce Strategy and upon approval from the Vice-Chancellor and President, a Diploma with four (4) years of relevant experience in technical or administrative fields may be considered; or
  • An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training;
  • Proven experience in financial reporting coupled with sound knowledge of accounting principles and practices;
  • Spreadsheet proficiency;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines;
  • Ability of work under pressure with minimal supervision;
  • Problem solving and Teamwork approach;
  • Good analytical skills in terms of data collation and interpretation;
  • Good organizational and time management skills and be results focused;
  • Creativity, innovative and change-oriented;
  • Ability to give and receive constructive feedback;
  • Flexibility and adaptability – capable of working after hours and weekend if required to complete assigned tasks;

Desirable Criteria:

  • Knowledge and experience in MYOB;
  • Membership in a Professional Accounting body;
  • Experience in an Educational Institute;
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural organization.

The position is available for a term of three years, renewable by mutual agreement.

Salary Range

TOP $33,816 - TOP $39,620 per annum
