The Opportunity

The School

The successful candidate will be based in the School of Pacific Arts, Communication and Education (SPACE) which houses the disciplines of Literature, Academic English, Pacific Studies, Linguistics, Education and Journalism. SPACE also offers programmes in the vernacular languages of the Pacific and is host to the Confucius Institute and the Oceania Centre for Arts, Culture and Pacific Studies. SPACE encourages collegiality and is invested in the cultivation of a dynamic scholarly community.  It is one of the more research-focused schools in the university, a trend SPACE invites the successful applicant to continue.

The successful applicant will be an active member of the school’s vibrant research culture, and will contribute to teaching, course development and supervision at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The applicant will teach four courses: JN201 Online Journalism; JN202 Radio Journalism; JN203 Television Journalism and JN302 Journalism Research. The successful applicant will also undertake management and administrative duties commensurate with the role.

The Person we Seek

To be considered for this position, applicants must have:

For the appointment at Assistant Lecturer Level;

  • A postgraduate degree (Masters / PhD) in a relevant discipline; or
  • An established record of successful teaching and course development at tertiary and or secondary level  

For the appointment at Lecturer Level;

  • A PhD in the relevant field with relevant tertiary teaching and/or research experience; or
  • In exceptional cases, a Master’s degree or professional qualification with relevant teaching experience or relevant industry/professional experience or a significant research;
  • Formal tertiary teaching qualification; or
  • Minimum 24 months teaching experience in the relevant field;
  • Minimum five years professional experience as a journalist in radio, television, and online platforms, with demonstrated proficiency in contemporary and digital technologies;
  • Experience in teaching and practicing journalism in the Pacific will be an added advantage.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment;
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others;
  • Ability to conduct team / shared tasks.

The position is available for a term of 5 years and may be renewed by mutual agreement.

Salary Range

  • Assistant Lecturer: FJD71,212 to FJD85,454 per annum
  • Lecturer: FJD90,493 to FJD119,068 per annum
