The Opportunity
The School of Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics (STEMP) is one of the largest schools at The University of the South Pacific and is sufficiently resourced to pursue excellence in teaching and research. The school staff are actively involved in research in the area of renewable energy.
The school seeks to appoint a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the area of energy. The appointee will be required to work full-time on the Clean Energy Access in Remote Pacific Island Communities (CLEARPICS) project funded by Carbon Trust, UK to SPC. The project is aimed at increasing the access to electricity with the inclusion of some of the most remote and rural communities in Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and PNG. The appointee will be required to carry out market intelligence survey and produce necessary data for the dissemination of off-grid solar and mini-grid to the rural areas of these countries, map out the potential for off-grid solar markets as well as the current mini-grid projects in these countries. He/she will be required to prepare a final report based on existing experiences, mapping out potential different models for mini-grid projects across these countries, attuned to the data collected in the earlier phases of the project.
The appointee will be expected to work with the researchers while mainly supervised and guided by Prof. M. R. Ahmed and will be required to keep SPC informed of his activities and progress. She/he will be based at the main Laucala campus in Fiji but will be required to travel within Fiji and to Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and PNG for his research work.
General standard:
i) A Post-Doctoral Research Fellow is expected to carry out independent research and prepare technical reports and journal articles with minimum supervision.
ii) A Post-Doctoral Research Fellow is expected to demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of people, especially in the energy sector.
The Person we Seek
To be considered for this position, applicants must have:
- a PhD degree from a recognized University in the area of energy;
- relevant industrial or research experience;
- excellent written and oral communication skills in English;
- demonstrated ability to work as a member of a research team;
- candidates with a Master’s degree (by thesis) may be considered if they have a very good research and publications record.
Preference will be given to applicants who:
- have demonstrated ability to work as a member of a research team;
- are citizens or permanent residents of Pacific Island Countries;
- are able to demonstrate self-reliant and can work independently.

Salary Range
- FJ $78,200 to FJ $102,893 per annum.
